The Public Works Department is planning a street project to improve the safety of the South Main Street corridor in the vicinity of Port Republic Road. Due to the growing amount of activity in this area of the City, the capacity of the southbound dual left turn lanes on South Main Street at Port Republic Road is routinely exceeded, causing safety concerns for southbound traffic on on South Main Street, when the line of left turning vehicles backs up into the through lane.
The project will extend the southbound dual left turn lanes for approximately 200 feet, to help accommodate the increased volume of left turning vehicles. Additionally, a channelizing island will be installed at the East Fairview Avenue/South Main Street intersection that will restrict turning movements to allow only right turns in and right turns outs out of the neighborhood. The channelizing island will look and operate like the one found on the other side of South Main Street, at West Fairview Avenue.
