Discussion: Are You Prepared?

September is National Preparedness Month. Each department within the City of Harrisonburg has plans in place to ensure they are prepared for a variety of disasters that could arise. Harrisonburg, along with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM), is encouraging the community to "Be Disaster Aware, Take Action to Prepare."

Additional resources on emergency preparedness are available at www.ready.gov

Residents should be informed, make a plan, build a kit, and get involved. What preparedness measures are you taking that you could share with your neighbors?

I am from an area where we always had a plan to be prepared for emergencies. We have a generator, a packed bag "ready to go", many candles, foods that can be eaten without cooking, and various types of automatic lighting/LED lanterns for household and other lighting if and when needed. Now that I am in the valley, I take nothing for granted and continue my preparedness concepts. Better safe than sorry!
