Downtown Streetscape Project - Our Next Steps
During construction, some businesses will have a temporary inconvenience outside their front door. Construction will take place block by block. The entire project area will not be under construction at the same time. The city and its chosen contractor will work closely with each business that will be impacted to make the appropriate accommodations.
Improvements that will be made during this phase of the project include sidewalk reconstruction, addition of curb ramps, the replacement of the existing traffic signals with decorative traffic and pedestrian signals, improved lighting, and landscaping.
Phase 2 of the Downtown Streetscape Project is estimated to cost $1.4 million. Funding for this project comes from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Transportation Enhancement Funds and city funds.
The anticipated project schedule is: Contractor selected - April 2014, Construction begins - May 2014, and Construction is complete - December 2014.
